Manly had "been wanting to write something about our dear brother who is gone from us, Dr. Williams, ... but nothing that I meditate seems to me fit to be written." "It makes no break in [the] current work of Sem[inar]y as you had provided for his absence; but it creates a necessity of a permanent filling of vacancy. ... My memory goes back, with pleasing sadness to the 12 years we spent together in our work in So. Ca. They were, not withstanding the war & other afflictions, the happiest years of my life ... My work suited me. I loved it, I was ready to make sacrifices for it." "I thought the funds of the [Georgetown] college and consequently its means of progress were greater than they turned out to be, after throwing out the unavailable subscriptions which had been reported as assets year after year, without the remotest prospect of collecting them." "I have consented to try to prepare notes on Acts, in connection with Dr. Hovey and others as you are aware. What helps are worth my getting besides ..."
